There are many misconceptions around the risks associated with substance use. Substance use has been normalized within our society.  Smoking, drinking, and other drug use is often glamorized in movies, television shows, and music. In many cases, substance use is also commonplace among our friends and family. It is important to recognize that substance use does pose risk to your health, wellness, and safety.

Experimenting with substances may be viewed as normal but puts you at much higher risk for addiction. Substances that are commonly abused include alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, heroin, ecstasy, methamphetamine, cocaine, and hallucinogens. Continued substance use causes changes within the brain which leads to cravings and a physical dependence on the substance. This can make it difficult to stop using substances. Some people are more vulnerable to becoming addicted to substances based on a variety of factors. These include family history of addiction, struggles at home, mental health issues, challenges at school, social issues, and negative influences. It is advised to monitor for any disruptions in school, work, relationships, health, and safety. If you see these warning signs in your loved ones begin by having a conversation with them. Express that you care and are available to support them in resolving the issues at hand.

If there are concerns regarding your substance use, you may consider talking with a substance use professional. Substance use treatment is effective in helping someone stop their drug use, prevent relapse, and repair any ruptures in their lives. Treatment focuses on more than just the substance use. Treatment also addresses the deeper reasons for use. This would include skill building to live a happier and healthier life.
